30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 29

Todays hair was so much fun, and it’s a lovely sunny day, so perfect for a pony and a scarf. I’ve also been listening to Amy Winehouse on the jukebox, so I guess that has influenced me as well. Lots of teasing and hairspray at the top. I separated my hair into 3 sections, and then I rolled the hair over my palm and pinned underneath. For the pony/scarf version, I got a long thin scarf and pulled over the top of my hair, double-knotted underneath (then tucked the knot under where my pony will sit). I then brought the scarf around and made a pony, tying the scarf into a bow. Of course, you could customise this hairstyle, but leaving the bottom part of your hair out, still using the scarf, or without a scarf.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 28

I was a bit more adventurous today as I am coming to the end of the 30 day challenge. I tackled the 1950’s bettie page style rolled fringe. There are two lots of pictures, the first ones you will see are of my attempt again last night, so it looks much better. The larger sharper pics are my first attempts during the day : )

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 27

Where going back to “Grease” today, with a sock hop kinda feeling. This is a very versatile hairstyle, it can great for a 1950’s dress-up party, or just a cute ponytail for a warm day. Add a headband or hair bow at the top of the ponytail to ‘cuten it up’. All I did was grab the front fringe section and tease it at the back will a fine comb to get volume (you could have go for more volume at the front if you wanted). Then I pulled all the rest of my hair into a high pony, using the fine comb and hairspray to make the sides smooth. It is great if you have curly hair here, I just combed and twisted the pony around my finger to create a smooth 50’s pony. If you have curly hair, just use a curling iron or rollers to create one nice smooth curl for your ponytail.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 26

Today it was victory rolls in a lower position, and I am really liking this vintage hairstyle, great if you have curls. You can also roughen it up a little if you don’t want the polished look. I have two sets of hairstyle pictures here. One is with each side pulled to the side in the rolls, these took a while to get the shape I wanted. Then I wanted another version of the look and I twisted a small amount of hair from each side and pinned it.

"My Week with Marilyn" Sandra V movie review Feb 17th, 2012

MV5BMTYzODYwOTIzOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODE2NjAwNw@@._V1._SY317_CR0,0,214,317_
I went on a ‘date night’ with my hubby last night and saw “My week with Marilyn” at the movies, I am not a movie critic or a writer, but this is my opinion on the film....

To set the scene, or let you into my headspace, I had been excited all week to see the movie. Actually ever since I heard it was coming out I was excited, but it went up a knotch when I saw that it opened on Feb 16th, 2012. Finally I had a date. Recently, Michelle Williams had won the “Golden Globe Award for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy” for her rendition of Marilyn Monroe in the movie, so began my hearts rising hope that she had done a good job. She also earned Best Actress nominations from the ‘Academy Awards’ and ‘British Academy Film Awards’. Added to that, I saw “At the movies” on ABC1 and Margaret and David gave it 4 stars each. Now, I don’t usually listen to reviews, as movies that the papers bag, I love *lol* (dont know what that says about my taste!), but having them both agree made me think it could be good.

As many people I would guess, when I first read that Michelle was playing Marilyn I was a little sceptical, but hopeful. I would have to say that playing Marilyn Monroe would have to be one of the hardest acting jobs. Everyone has opinions about her, has read stories, and seen millions of photos of her, so if you decided to act her you’d have to be pretty confident that you could do it very well, or expect an absolute caning from the press. Everyone has an opinion on Marilyn. Some dislike her, some love her. Some people believe rumours about her, others read books, see movies about her, devour anything about her. I adore Marilyn. I think she is gorgeous, and vivacious. I believe she was victim of a movie company/people that put her in a box, took advantage of her, and refused to let her be the actress she desperately wanted to be. To them it was all about the $$$ and the persons needs or wants inside did not matter. Added to her family history, her need to be loved, then her dependence on alcohol and pills, her insecurities intensified and affected her acting and life. I think some people saw glimpses of a happy ‘norma jean’, but mostly saw ‘marilyn monroe’, the only person Norma believed was worthy of love. Don’t get me started on her affair with President Kennedy *lol*.

The movie is based on two books by Colin Clark, and depicts a time during the making of the 1957 movie “The Prince and the Showgirl” staring Marilyn Monroe and Sir Laurence Olivier. The movie looks at a week through Colin eyes as he worked as a directors assistant on the movie, and escorted Marilyn around Britain during the shooting of the movie.

The movie started with "Marilyn" singing and I thought “oh no”, I wasn’t not sure if I liked her straight away. But I wanted to wait and see. Thankfully as the movie went on, and I saw Michelle as Marilyn, I really began to like Michelle Williams in the role. She wasn’t over the top (which is what I was scared she would be), but true to how I believed Marilyn would be. They really did a great job in hair and makeup too in transforming her into Marilyn. The only problem is that you know you are looking at Michelle (if that makes sense), even though she did an unbelievable job, you do have to remind yourself sometimes that she is playing Marilyn Monroe. I do not think that this is a fault of Michelle at all, I am so used to seeing Marilyn’s face that it would be pretty hard (unless Michelle had a face lift!) to get lost in the movie and forget that you were watching an actress. I really enjoyed the movie, I loved the story, it was one I had not heard of before, and found it very believable. The actor playing ‘Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) was fantastic, as was Judi Dench and Kenneth Branagh as Sir Laurence Olivier. Michelle Williams had Marilyn’s posture, walk, voice and dance down, and I would definately see the movie again.

When I first saw “The Prince and the Showgirl”, I loved it. I loved the costumes, the story, but mostly I was in awe of Marilyn Monroe in the movie, she shined. She just had the special quality/ability to steal every scene that she was in, it was like magic. This movie captured some of that magic, but gave us a view from the other side, and I am thankful for that, to see a little glimpse of the person behind the mask of ‘Marilyn’. Hopefully wherever Marilyn is, she can be free from all her burdens.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 25

I won’t lie to you, today took ages! And many tries, pulling out and trying again. But, I am sure this time will reduce, as I have learnt a lot today about shaping victory rolls. It really involves a lot of playing to get nice shapes, and holding your hair tight as you roll it to the scalp. I certainly haven’t perfected it, but I am getting better!

Because I have natural curls and layers, and I wanted to try a bit more of a polished look, I used some hair gel before i started the victory rolls, and I also sprayed with hairspray during the process. and it did help to hold and smooth the look of the victory roll.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 24

I’m really into perfecting victory rolls at the moment with part down hair. It’s a little trickier when you have layers and curly hair, but I will keep practising! I’ll be working on different positions and shapes in the next couple of days to get slightly different looks. This is more structured than day 23 and done on both sides, and I didn’t take too much hair on either side.

My hair is looking healthier, as I finally got it cut! Feels so much nicer. Todays vintage hairstyle is a soft victory roll pinned on the side. It gives a lovely soft look, great for curly hair.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 22

As the days are going in, I know I am recycling some of the designs and modifying them. But, that is how you can sometimes come up with new hair designs. Here’s a style similar to day 15, but by just repositioning the plaits/braids and changing the side part it does give it a different look. It’s a small braid on both sides and pinned. One side is pinned directly behind the ears, the other looser and pinned a little further back with hair covering the elastic holding the plait

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 21

This is nice for a casual summer or spring day hairstyle. I twisted the sides to the back and with the pony instead of plaiting it, I actually knotted it a couple of times (it’s a little hard to see this is the picture). This would look a lot better if you had thicker and longer hair, but I have to work with what I have! Give it a try and email me your pics and I’ll post them up.

Bye lovelies and ‘happy valentines day’!

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 20

I am starting to get a little better with my victory rolls, but still need to practice in making them look smoother and rounder (a little harder when you have curly hair). If I had the time, I would straighten my hair first before doing the rolls to get a more polished look. My hair also needs a really good cut (scheduled for thursday), so it will look a lot healthier after that. Hope you like this one...

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 19

I am the sort of person that sticks with the same hairstyle for a while if I am happy with it, so this 30-day vintage hair challenge has been very different for me, and has stretched and changed my thinking in relation to my hair.

I highly recommend setting yourself a challenge like this if you complain “I can’t do much with my hair because it’s (fill in your blank).....curly, short, thin, too thick, too straight etc”, whatever your crutch is. This challenge has proved to me that no matter what your hair is like you can do something different with it, you just have to adapt the style and pick styles that suit you personally, looking into the shape of your face and hair type.

I always thought that I didn’t look good with my hair up and that is why I always wore it down (normally with the fringe pinned back). I always wished I had thick and straight hair (mind you I would still like thicker hair), and thought I couldn’t do much with it. But you can work with what you have, you can use hairdryers, straighteners, or curlers. I haven’t used anything in this challenge apart from drying my hair off to get ready for a style. I realsie how lucky I am to have curls! But now, I seem to be leaning to up-do’s more than down styles, because they are so versatile!

Anyway, I hope I have inspired some people to give it a go. None of my hairstyles have taken very much time to do (as I am a very busy mum and shop owner, so I don’t have a lot of time like a lot of you). The thing is, once you do a style on your hair and like it, it is quicker to do again the next time. And if you can take a photo of it, it makes it a lot easier to see how you did it if you need reminding for next time.

This one is a side pony, a soft victory roll at the fringe, with a scrunching/pushing up/teasing technique I have recently learnt, and then lots of pins and hairspray.

Anyway, hope you like this one too.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 18

I actually managed to do this hairstyle quite quickly before school pickup. I used the twirl and twist on each side of my hair and pinned them into buns, after pulling my fringe out. I then pinned part of it back and left other bits loose. It’s a nice, soft vintage look.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 16

Today took a lot of trial and error, and I kind of stumbled across this style with just playing with victory rolls at the front to begin with. I just wasn’t happy with the bottom section, so I starting playing with putting it up at the back. This is where I am thankful that I have curls, because they can really sit beautifully sometimes without very much effort at all : ) Leave me your comments underneath the last photo.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 15

Going with a bit of a hippy vibe again today, must be because I have a dress-up party coming up! I parted my hair on the other side than I normally do this time to give a different look. I parted the hair where the back section could be teased to give some body (as I have such thin hair) to the back of the hair as well. I then braided each side and pinned at the back.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 14

This is a basic hair design that took me a while to get right! (if that makes ANY sense *lol*). It involves lots of teasing the top section and then holding each side back and pinning, but it takes a while to get the right shape so it looks good from the front, side and back.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 13

It’s a hot and windy day so up the hair goes again! (maybe I need to do winter and summer 30 day challenges to get an even up-hair and down-hair ratio! *lol*
I continued with the middle part theme from yesterday and parted my hair in the middle right through the back so I had even sections on both sides. I took out a little of the front (the fringe) out from the front on either side. Then, taking turns on both sides I twisted the hair, and rolled, twirled and pinned at the back. I then pinned back the fringe parts on either side and pulled a little out on either side to soften the vintage hairstyle.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 12

I never said the hairstyles had to be tricky *lol*, todays is the quickest and easiest hairstyle of them all!, but I still think it’s nice. I actually wore yesterday’s hair today, see below, so even after sleeping in it you could wear it the next day without much effort. It’s a little bit messier but I like the messy look. I just sprayed it with hairspray again, and smoothed and roughed it up a little. See below...
day11_secondday2 day11_secondday day11second

And here is the easy vintage style hair for today, a bit hippy 1970’s inspired. Just twist the hair on each side after parting in the middle and bobby pin back. Add a cute flower to the side and you have a lovely, easy, beachy “day out in the kombi van” hair look : )

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 11

Hi!

Today I have another up-do, and its great if you know how to braid. I started off spraying my hair with hairspray to give it some hold before I braided. Then the style is just a braid from the top of one side of your hair, then along the bottom and to the other side (it’s takes a few goes to get it right). Then, the ponytail is pulled into a circle bun and clipped with bobby pins. It’s a pretty versatile vintage hairstyle, as it could be great for a summer day, or for going out. Once you have then braided, hairspray again all over, let it dry, then mess your hair up a little to soften it. I really like this one.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 10

Hi!

I’ve had a very crazy busy day at the shop (which is wonderful!). It’s also the day before school starts and for some reason the kids seem to go crazy all of a sudden!
This vintage hairstyle is lovely for weddings/parties or a day look if you would like something a little dressier. Let me know if you would like a tutorial, it’s a little tricky unless you know the technique (but very clever and simple!). I may be a little later tomorrow as it is my birthday (yay!) and my little girls first day at school (eek!)

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 9

Howdy!
This hair design is more time but worth it for a special occasion, or just when you are looking for a nice up-do. I did twisting and rolling for my fringe sections (it really is a trial and error to get a nice shape). I started with victory rolls but I just wasn’t happy with the result on myself, do I combed and twisted the hair, then rolled and fiddled until I was happy. Then it involves lots of bobby pins and hairspray! The back (and bottom section) is the nicest part I think, and it is sooo simple! All you are doing is rolling the back section up to the nape of your neck, and tucking it under, then it is a lot of pinning and spraying as before! I strated off with it quite tight, but prefered the look of it looser on myself. You really have to try things on yourself to see what suits you with these hairstyles. Hope you like this 1940’s/1950’s style vintage look.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 8

Hi!
I wasn’t really sure what hairstyle to do today, but thought I would start doing some victory rolls. I didn’t have a lot of time and my rolls weren’t as good as I would’ve liked, but when I unrolled them, out came a lovely smooth curl on one side of my face. I didn’t want to waste the nice curl, so I worked with it and sprayed it with hairspray to keep the nice shape, and played with the shape a little to get it smoother. You can see in the pics where the curl has changed a little. I then decided that I could use my gorgeous “My Little Rockabilly” hair comb on the other side of my hair, and I could be on my way! So, in the end it looks like a pretty simple hairstyle, but there a bit of combing, hair twirling, and hairspraying for me to get the smoother looking curls (you could achieve this with a curling wand). I have a great idea for tomorrow, so don’t forget to check it out : )

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 7

Hi!
The weather in Melbourne is very humid but overcast and windy, and its hard to know what to wear on these type of days. I decided on a half up/half down vintage look. It’s a bit hippy/60’s-70’s era I think. It’s a little labour intensive but still really only takes 10 minutes. Just not a great one to do in a rush (unless you’ve done it a few times). It’s a little hard to see with my hair as its brown and curly, but what I did was tie my hair in knots (just like tying a normal knot) on each side of my hair. I then pinned it back behind my ears and teased the back section of the hair. I played with the volume a little with teasing and hairspray, then pinned it back.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 6

Hi!
I was so organised yesterday, had all my hair photos ready, and then my portable hard drive cacked it, and I couldn’t get into my web files! Thank god I got one file to open, so today you will get two hairstyles (lucky you!). This is really nice for weddings, I recently did this style for a wedding and I loved it. It is basically 5 ponies tied at the back (at different heights) then twirled and pinned. I then teased the fringe and pulled back.

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 5

Hi!
Today I was in such a rush (running late), and as I was getting ready was thinking over hair ideas for the day. As I had the front panel teased yesterday for the quiff, it still had a stiffness and volume, so I decided to work with that! And, as I had done a few up do’s I decided to do a half up/half down hairstyle for curly hair. I simply pulled the fringe up and back, trying to smooth and create volume as I held it back, then I grabbed a panel on each side of my hair and pulled directly back to smooth the sides and join to the top panel. Then, all that was needed was 4 bobby pins and deciding which cute comb/hairpiece I would use to hide the bobby pins. Very simple and very quick, add the red lippy and your on your way!
Let me know what you think : )

30 days of vintage hairstyle - Day 4

Hi!
Seems to me that when the sun’s out now I am feeling the up or the side do *lol*. I started off with a bit of a quiff at the fringe by teasing quite a bit ,and then pinning back. I then felt it was a little too ordinary, so I tried the side pony. Then, remembering that I had a few gorgeous hair flowers, I thought I would add them to the mix, especially a large blue one that my kids always nick (and I had to have a bit of a search finding!). I have also done some versions with just the pony, and others where I pulled the pony up into the hairtie to do a bit of a bun.

Happy Australia Day everyone!
Its a beautiful sunny ‘bbq in the park’ kind of day today, and I actually watched ‘The Notebook’ last night so still in the 40s kinda vibe, so I thought I’d try another up do. Looks quite plain from the front, but the side looks kinda cool to me.

30 days of vintage hairstyles - Day 2

A little cooler today in Melbourne, and once I put on my handmade ‘Jack Daughters’ 1940s inspired tea dress, I could help but go with a 40’s hairstyle vibe. This is probably the simplest hairstyle you could do (and the quickest!). Just a comb on one side of the hair and a twist and pin on the other side. I didn’t take too many pics of this one, but will do some more soon of the other side.

What should we call this one? It reminds me a little of the gorgeous film “The Notebook”.

30 days of vintage hairsyles - Day 1

It’s heating up in Melbourne (better late than never), so I decided to do a pulled up vintagey/boho style as my hair is long. I pretty much make the hairstyles up according to what I am wearing and the weather, and as you will see my hair rarely looks neat, with curls and thinness. Maybe i will get better as I go along :

As you will see, the styles I do (or am starting with, are VERY simple), you would be able to copy them without instructions.

I really liked this one, it was very cool on a hot day and a little different. Especially for me who always has her hair down. Just a simple plait on the side, and because I have a fringe, I just plaited the fringe and pinned back. If you have any extra strays just pin them in. I also used hairspray to keep it all in. Its meant to be messy style so anything goes.

What do you think we should call this one?
